Golf in Mar del Plata

In Mar del Plata, golfers have the chance to play on a different golf course each day, which makes the challenge highly attractive even to the most demanding amateur. These courses are complemented by a Scottish-style golf course located in the neighboring city of Miramar, 40 km along Road 11 towards the South.

For all golf lovers, courses in Mar del Plata offer the possibility of playing by the sea, or surrounded by mountainous scenery or even at the heart of an ancient grove.

This sport was first practiced in the 19th century, in 1890, by the senior executives of the British railway companies in the dunes of Playa Grande. Since then, the passion for golf has grown and today the city has four golf clubs and five courses of international level, approved by the Argentinian Golf Association and available all year-round for players with or without handicap. In some of them golf clubs can be rented and clothing, equipment and accessories can be bought in specialized shops.

On January 23rd, 1910, the social center opened its doors on Luro Av. and the seaside. In the beginning, all the activities were carried out in Parque Camet, on a 9-hole course, but in the mid 1950s the lands in Camet were expropriated and, as a result, the club’s authorities had the task of finding a new site with the help of a monetary compensation. The chosen site was a 93-has field where the club is currently located.

On January 1st, 1956, the construction of a building intended for social activities began, and in the same year the first 9 holes were inaugurated. Later, the remaining 9 holes were completed, thus giving life to the well-known yellow course. Agustín Posse and foreman Herminio Brunatti completed the course with holes from 19th to the present 27th.

The Club House had two openings, the final one in December, 1961. Until 1985, the beach resorts of Playa Grande were part of this club.

Together with the outlining of the course, the afforestation had to be adapted and today there are over 10,000 plants, some of which are being renewed. Among the species, pine trees, cedars and cypresses can be found. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has not posed a problem for the conservation of this rich environment. At present, some deep-drilling works are being carried out using a special drainage system.

Different tournaments are organized regularly, a27 yards mong them: Copa de Oro Dr. Eugenio Blanco, in January and Copa de Oro Senior, in October. Open tournaments are also held every weekend in Winter and every day in Summer. The latter are open to the public on weekdays, and exclusive for club members at weekends.

How to reach Mar del Plata:

You can reach the city through various means of transport: there are 3 provincial roads and a highway connecting Mar del Plate and the Capital; a railway station with 29 weekly arrivals; a bus station where tickets are sold by over 50 companies; an airport that operates internationally with 6 airline companies in more than 130 weekly services, and an artificial harbor of deep water that –apart from being crucial to the fishing activity- allows cruise ships to anchor at the northern breakwater.

If you travel from Buenos Aires by car, via routes 11, 88 and 226, or via the modern and safe highway 2, the trip can take an average of four hours. But for those who decide to make the most of time, they can get to the city after a 45-minute flight. The International Airport “Astor Piazzolla” is situated only 10 minutes from downtown Mar del Plata. Three airlines operate with national destinations, with a frequency that increases significantly during the summer season.
