The Train on its way to the Clouds

The local people. Part of the landscape.
This is an incredible journey and one of the most amazing works of man, even equal to Eiffel Tower and other wonders. We ow it to the genius and inspiration of engineer Ricardo Fontaine Maury.
The passengers can appreciate the astonishing landscape and the cunning engineering that was used in the construction of this Train.

The complete extension of the tourist circuit from Salta City (Salta Province)to "La Polvorilla" viaduct is 217 Km. The train travels along 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 "curls" ( here the convoy goes up and down from a height ) and 2 "zigzag" ( here the train has to go forward and backward to ascend ).

Undoubtedly "La Polvorilla" viaduct is the main attraction of the tour. This counstruction has a total length of 224 m and it is alm ost 70 high over the bed of the river. This bridge is curved and it does not have rails.

The "The Train to the Clouds" departs from "Ferrocarril General Belgrano" station, in Salta City, located 1187 meters above sea level, at 7:10 am and returns at 9:50 pm. After crossing Arenales River, which divides the city in two, the first station is Alvarado. Next the train arrives at Cerrillos, where in 1816 the historic Cerrillos treaty was subscribed between General Güemes and Rondeau. The next station is Rosario de Lerma, located in the middle of the valley called Hernando de Lerna, named after the founder of Salta. These lands are mainly dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco. The next town, Campo Quijano, is called "El Portal de los Andes" (los Andes entrance). It is a beautiful village where engineer Maury first established his camp and where his remains rest. From Campo Quijano the first mountains of Los Andes can be seen. From this point the train enters to Quebrado del Toro, which offers the passenger the most incredible variety of colors. El Alisal is the next stop and this is where the railway epic really starts. Here the first zigzag suddenly appears.

Josef Broz, exiled and known as Mariscal Tito, was one of the men that worked in the undertaking. Finally he became a leader in his country: Yugoslavia. Chorrillos comes next, at 2111 m.o.s.l. Even higher, 78 km from the city of Salta we find "Ingeniero Maury". This town was named after the proffesiontal born in Pennsylvania anda died on July 31st 1950. This is a place of special attraction, since Nature has buildt its own monuments such as "La Oreja del Indio", "El Cerro bañado de Chocolate", "Los Laberintos", etc. These wonders can be enjoyed on both sides of the rails.

13 km ahead the train arrives at Gobernador Solá, which remembers the leader of the North Provinces League against Rosas. From there on, the landscape changes notoriously and the green turs into mining works of lead, iron, manganese and silver.

The train continues it journey through several other stations. It progressively win height and runs on the slopes of the mountains, defeting them if necessary, with tunnels and bridges.
