Description:

The province of Mendoza, center-west Argentina, is bounded by the province of San Juan, on the north; the province of San Luis, on the east; the provinces of La Pampa and Neuquén, on the south; and the Republic of Chile, on the west.

This province has an area of 148,827 square kilometers (4% of the country total), framed by arid plains on the east and the Andes cordillera, on the west.

The rivers, originating in the thaw of the Andes summits, are channelled through irrigation canals and dams. This has created three long oasis: North, Valle de Uco, and South, where 85% of the total population is concentrated.Climate is dry, due to the mountains that block the humidity coming from the Pacific Ocean.

Total annual rainfall is poor, 250 mm, mostly occurring in summer, due to the winds which blow from the Atlantic.

Average temperatures range from 24.6°C/76°F in summer to 9.4°C/49°F in winter.

Political Organization and Demographic Structure:

This province, the capital of which is Mendoza, is divided into 18 departments, which have separate political and administrative powers.

Annual average growth rate is 16‰, while density is 9.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Urban population comes up to 78%. (1991).

Economic Structure:

In 1993, the primary sector contributed 11% to the value added of the total supply of goods and services. The secondary sector generated 32%, while the remaining 57% corresponds to the supply of financial, transport and communications, commerce, tourism, and government services.

Mendoza is one of the provinces with the highest relative development. Its traditional specialization have been the agroindustrial complexes processing local raw materials -grapes, fruits and vegetables-, to which semi-processed goods are to be added -oil refining and ferroalloys, among others- as well as the development of a fairly complex engineering industry and tourism. Exports indexes have also increased, the major significance corresponds to oil and related products, and certain vegetables.

Tourism:

Tourist attractiveness is chiefly based on its skiing resorts: Las Leñas, Penitentes, Vallecitos and Manantiales. As well as its National Park Aconcagua with the Aconcagua Peak ( 6,959 m.o.s.l) as its main attraction.

Another important reason of travelling to Mendoza is its wine production and vineyards. Mendoza produces top quality red and white wines. From Malbec, Cavernet Sauvignon, Merlot to Chardonnay and Savignon Blanc.
