The province of San Luis, situated in the geographic center of Argentina, is bounded by La Rioja on the north; Córdoba on the northeast; La Pampa on the east and the southeast; of Mendoza on the west and southwest; and San Juan on the northwest.

San Luis has an area of 76,748 square kilometers (2% of the country total) of which, some 4,000 are occupied by the sierras called Pampean (with lower altitudes than those in the neighboring provinces), located mostly in the northern half of the province.

From these sierras descend the waters that nourish the main rivers, such as Quinto and Conlara, where twelve dams were built to store and distribute their waters. Irrigation capacity exceeds 40,000 hectares.

Political Organization and Demographic Structure:

This province, having San Luis as its capital city, is divided into 9 departments with separate political and administrative powers.

Annual average growth rate is 28‰, while density amounts to 4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Urban population comes up to 84%. (2001).

Economic Structure:

In 1993, the primary sector contributes nearly 7% to the value added of the total supply of goods and services. The secondary sector generated 65%, while the remaining 28% of the global economic activity corresponds to the supply of financial, transport and communications, commerce, tourism, and government services.

The traditional specializations of San Luis were agriculture and animal husbandry, orientated to Pampean productions (especially livestock). Nevertheless, this structure has changed since the province’s participation in “the industrialization of new areas”, which took place during the second part of the past decade. The most outstanding branches are “basic metal industries”, “engineering industry”, “chemicals” and, in a lesser degree, “textiles and clothing”. A further characteristic consists in exports of manufactures, principally “footwear” and, in a lesser degree at national level, “machinery” and “vehicles”.
