Las Grutas is situated in the southeast of Río Negro province. On the coast of Golfo Azul (Blue Gulf), only 15 Km. from San Antonio Oeste, district it belongs to.

It is a summer resort of 5,000 inhabitants that reach 20,000 in summer. Its main attractions are the beautiful white sand beaches, it tempered and clear water as well as the infrastructure that allows the tourists enjoying the local casino, go dancing or practicing several sports.

Being in the very heart of San Matías Gulf , and having medium sized cliffs, this place has little or no wind at all, something incredible for Patagonia. From here you can take excursions to Sierra Grande, to discover the old iron mines, the Port of San Antonio Este, with unique beaches also, or San Antonio Oeste with its small fishing port. Also, you can practice water sports (like underwater swimming) or renting horses to make your own tour along the beaches near central Las Grutas. Each February the "Fiesta del Golfo" (Gulf Festival) takes place with several concerts, parties and the election of the Gulf Queen.

Las Grutas', meaning "The Caves" in Spanish, comes from the caves created by the erosion of the sea on the cliffs that separate the city from the beach. The access to the beaches is therefore restricted to the existing 12 descends or "bajadas". Their names, from north to south, are "3 de febrero", "Los acantilados", "A.C.A.", "La rueda", "Cero", "Primera", "Segunda", "Tercera", "Cuarta", "Quinta", "Sexta" y "Séptima", the last seven named from first to seventh.

The first accesses where the ones named "Primera", "Segunda", and "Tercera" (first, second and third), to which new ones were added as the town, and the number of visitors grew.

Near the "Cero" access there are pools artificially carved in the stone that change their water in every tidal cycle. When the tide is low, the water in the pools is quicly warmed by the sun. In colder days, old people and children sometimes prefer to make use of the pools instead of the sea.
