My son was invited to tour Argentina with his soccer team. Some of the parents decided to tag along and our stop in Buenos Aires was booked at the 562 Nogaro.
My husband and I had a room on the 5th floor. While very small, it was clean and felt very European in nature. The natural hardwood floors were spectacular! Our window opened up to a nice, quiet courtyard and we felt safe enough to sleep with the windows open at night.
This hotel is located very close to the Plazo de Mayo complete with all it's local charm and charisma (we were treated to a protest about the paper factories in northern Argentina -- protests and local color are a daily thing, apparently, in that plaza. The protesters were all very respectful and I never felt in harms way at any time despite the very obvious police presence). Cabs all over the city were inexpensive and fast -- we did our fair share of shopping and eating!
The breakfast bar is exceptional (try that special local dish that has various meats wrapped around hard-boiled eggs and then sliced thin!) and the staff was exceptionally accomodating as to keeping it open hours that it wasn't normally for our team. Room service was so-so; don't waste your time. Take a cab to La Brigada and enjoy a REAL meal.
Small TV, and NO ALARM CLOCK or IRON (even at the front desk) which were our only complaints. Fantastic housekeeping service, but they won't replace the glasses in the room regardless of whether you used them for brushing your teeth or drinking wine. Good Malbec wine!
I was very pleased with my decision to stay here. For the price, the entire experience was terrific. While the room was small, with just enough room to walk around the bed and have a bit left over, I was traveling alone so it was sufficient for my purposes. (I would have felt cramped had my husband been with me!) That said, the bed was very comfortable, the room and bathroom were neat as a pin, and it was very quiet. The staff was courteous and helpful. I did not have to wait too long at any one time so did not experience some of the delays others have described in their posted comments. I did not interact much with other guests but noticed at breakfast that the hotel appears to draw an international crowd. Speaking of breakfast, it was wonderful! On Saturday morning, I had an omelet (with mushrooms, tomato, onion, and cheese) along with a luna (i think that is what it's called), poached pear, and as many cups of espresso (from the easy-to-operate machine in the beverage area) as I wished.
Stayed at the Nogaro Hotel in Feb 2007, and were pleased overall. The Plaza de Mayo location is excellent if you're looking for convenience and a quiet area at night. Very short walking distances to Calle Florida, several Subte stations, and the San Telmo Sunday markets. The Bolivar Subte station is at the end of the block.
We booked the executive suite on Expedia .. less than $30/night more than a regular room, so worth it. The king-size bed was very comfortable. There was a separate sitting room with TV, decent sized bathroom with excellent shower pressure, and a nice closet with a safe included.
The free breakfast was amazing .. truly an enormous selection of meats, cheeses, pastries, fruits, and a friendly fellow to make eggs as you wish. A late breakfast and light afternoon snack were enough to last me through the day til a typically huge, Argentine steak dinner.
My only complaints were the lack of good wireless internet signal in the room (7th fl), and the length of check-out time. I used a comfy chair in the stairwell to get a solid wireless signal, and there are two computer stations in the basement. As mentioned in other entries, the front desk is usually managed by two, very overwhelmed employees. They were competant and friendly, but busy! All was forgiven when my minibar bill came to about $7 USD for roughly 7-9 items. :-D
We would definitely stay again. Shoot me a message if you want more info or BA advice.
