I'm not recommending this hotel because of the service, the upkeep of the rooms, or some of the other things that usually impress people when they stay in a hotel. The number one reason for staying in this hotel is that it gives you a glimpse, as best a tourist can get, into a post-peso crisis phenomenon in Argentina: the development of the worker "Cooperativas" in which employees take over a failed business abandoned by the owners in order to keep their jobs. The Bauen, a disco-era hotel, never made a lot of money, and the peso crisis drove it under. The workers reacted by taking over and keeping it open. Virtually everything dates from its late-1970s opening: the lobby signs, the curves of the front desk, avocado Formica furniture, shiny globe-shape lamps, old televisions, and the pièce de la resistance, the underground disco lounge where you expect John Travolta to be dancing. Upper floors have fantastic views of the surrounding city. The staff is also exceptionally friendly and helpful. Some rooms also connect, which is ideal for families and friends staying in large groups.
