Puerto Madero Buenos Aires City

Buenos Aires's, youngest district, Puerto Madero, counts with 16 docks and four dikes which had been abandones for 60 years. By late XIX Century, Engineer Eduardo Madero projected an expensive port that took 20 years to be built; when it was opened it was already absolete and it operated 30 years. The urbanization, recovery and integration of the 170 abandoned hectares to create a new commercial, social and cultura centre and to turn Costanare Sur into a green space took place in 1989. Remodeling works and the reconstruction began with foreign investment; today the district does not show the crisis suffered n other areas of the city. By walking along the canal, you can see the enormous warehouses that keep the typical architecture from early XX Century, and that stand today as modern offices and lofts. Some porteños criticize this district arguing it has no soul, that is not organized and that it does not count with supermarkets, schools or cafés. But Puerto Madero keeps on growing with buildings designed by renowned architects like English Norman Foster.

Puerto Madero and Woman's Bridge

Puerto Madero Main Tourist Attractions:

Puerto Madero Yatch Club

Opposite to dike 4 you may see the white masts of vessels moored at the elegant Yatch Club, designed by a renowned English Firm. It counts with 200 moors, a very good restaurant in its floating club house and it offers helmsman and skippers courses, among other activities.

Sarmiento Frigate

Since 1897, the traditional frigate currently anchored at the peer, worked as training ship for the Argentine Army cadets. The frigate counts with 35 sails, 12 cannons, and keeps the original furniture. During the visit you may see a valuable photographs register and a wide book of anecdotes about its 39 tours around the world. The vessel was taken to several kings coronations. Guided tours are offered./p>

Woman's Bridge

The bridge at dike 3, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, is similar to his Puente del Alamillo and Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, but with a forward, rather than a reverse angled cantilever, as is seen in those bridges. It has become a symbol of Buenos Aires. The revolving bridge was opened in 2001, and it is for pedestrians' use: A stretch of the bridge revolves 90 degrees over its axis in just two minutes to allow the vessels circulations. Calatrava is said to have requested examples of Argentina's typical music upon receiving this commission. As a result, the bridge is abstractly meant to illustrate a couple dancing Tango, the man towering over the woman who is leaning back horizontally. This, along with the fact that the surrounding neighborhood has streets primarily named after women accounts for the name of the bridge.

The Galleon in Puerto Madero

During the excavtaions of a building under construction, archaeologist Marcelo Weissel found the remains of an early XVIII Century galleon, at eight metres deep. The wessel is thought to be of Spanish origin and would have run aground in an area that used to be a sandbank, inside the city's port. Two earthenware jars, complete vessels and strings in perfect conditions were also found.

Fortabat Collection

Fortabat Collection, the ciy's newest museum, offers 230 works, Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly designed the 7000 sq. meters state-of-the-art building with four levels, tow great exhibitions rooms and a great glass dome. There is a good option of Mediterranean gastronomy on the ground floor café.

The collection originated as an initiative of Mrs. Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat, whose interest in art and culture led her, over the years, to bring together a significant number of artworks from different eras by national and international authors. The Colección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat opens its doors to the general public in the month of October, with the aim of sharing a selection of over two hundred particularly relevant artworks and objects with the community at large. These piece are presented in two groups, according to their provenance; the first presents a survey of Argentinean art and the second, great masters from the realm of international art.
