Some Universities and other institutions offer courses of Spanish for foreigners. They could be helpful
to improve your Spanish before studying in a University or just to learn Spanish. In some cases they will
give you credits for your university. These institutions sometimes organises courses on other subjects as
an introduction to Argentine culture (Art, History, Society, etc.).
Before signing up for a course, read the description carefully, note all fees and try to determine
whether it suits your particular needs. Remember that small groups or individual tutoring offer the best
opportunities for improving language skills, but the latter is usually considerably more expensive.
Make your own choice:
a. Buenos Aires Herald. It is an Argentine newspaper written in English. Its Sunday
classified section offers several columns’ worth of possibilities, including individual tutoring.
b. Universidad de Buenos Aires Languages’ Laboratory: Good and cheap although not very intensive. Regular and intensive courses of eight, six and four hours a week at two different levels: Elementary (1-3) and Intermediate (4-7). Courses for Elementary 1 and 2 start every two months between January and October.
The regular courses start in January, February, March and August. Higher levels are developed through shorter courses, termed Specific Objective Courses, in which students deal with topics such as Humour, Hispano-American and Argentine Literature, Phonetics, History.
Conversation, etc.
The Laboratory also offers courses in English language for foreign university students, taught by highly
trained graduated teachers. In these courses students have the chance of facing topics of academic interest
such as Argentine History and XXth Century Latin-American Political Movements. Regular courses aim at the
development of the four linguistic skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening through the use of didactic
material developed by teachers from the Institution and published by the University.
Students must sit for an
oral and written level test to get admitted. Courses imply the use of Laboratory and Video session, but do not
include material or lodging. Once finished the course and having met the 75% attendance requirements as well
as the written practice, students must sit for a final exam to get a certificate, where the four abilities
are tested, the passing mark being 6 over 10 points. Apart from the offer of courses, the
Laboratory grants certificates for Spanish Language level C.E.B. (Certificado de Español Basico) and
C.E.I. (Certificado de Español Intermedio) through exams given at the Institution twice a year. Certificates
are intended for those foreign students coming from countries where the official language is not Spanish and
who, for academic or working reasons, need to certify their knowledge in the Spanish Language. For further
information about the courses, contact Spanish Co-ordinators, professors Andrea Rabih and Silvia Luppino:
