Description:
The province of Corrientes is a part of the region known as Mesopotamia. It
is bounded by the Republic of Paraguay, on the north; the province of Misiones, Brazil
and Uruguay, on the east; the province of Entre Ríos, on the south; and
the provinces of Santa Fe
and Chaco on the west.
Its area of 88,886 square kilometers (2.3% of the country total), shows the great impact
the dynamics of water has on its territory. There is a marked asymmetry between the eastern
and the western sectors, while the swamps and lagoons can be characterized by not forming an
organized hydrographic system.
most dynamic area is dominated by the Iberá lagoons and marshes, and
its main features are: location of the capital city in a privileged
position, in a non-flooded area where two water courses meet, the
Paraguay and the Paraná rivers; and small low-lying plains which
enable intensive agriculture of citrus trees, vegetables, tobacco, corn, etc.
Climate is a vital feature of the provincial landscape. Located in the subtropical
region, the territory is marked by abundant precipitation which decrease
from 1,600 mm annual in the northeast to 1,100 mm in the southwest. Average temperature is 20°C/68°F.
Political Organization and Demographic Structure:
This province, the capital of which is the city of Corrientes, is
divided into 25 departments with separate political and administrative powers.
Annual growth rate is 17.7‰, while density is 9 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Urban population comes up to 74%. (1991).
Economic Structure:
In 1994, the primary sector contributed 16% to the value
added of the global supply of goods and services. The secondary
sector generated 29%, and the remaining 55% corresponds to the
supply of financial, transport and communications, trade, tourism, and government services.
The productive structure of Corrientes is strongly concentrated on primary
activities and the processing of certain raw materials. The productive
mix includes livestock (sheep and cattle), raising and processing of
citrus, especially oranges, and rice, which has lately become quite
significant due to the Brazilian market. Traditional industrial crops
such as tea, mate and tobacco are also to be mentioned.
