Description:

The province of Corrientes is a part of the region known as Mesopotamia. It is bounded by the Republic of Paraguay, on the north; the province of Misiones, Brazil and Uruguay, on the east; the province of Entre Ríos, on the south; and the provinces of Santa Fe and Chaco on the west.

Its area of 88,886 square kilometers (2.3% of the country total), shows the great impact the dynamics of water has on its territory. There is a marked asymmetry between the eastern and the western sectors, while the swamps and lagoons can be characterized by not forming an organized hydrographic system.

most dynamic area is dominated by the Iberá lagoons and marshes, and its main features are: location of the capital city in a privileged position, in a non-flooded area where two water courses meet, the Paraguay and the Paraná rivers; and small low-lying plains which enable intensive agriculture of citrus trees, vegetables, tobacco, corn, etc.

Climate is a vital feature of the provincial landscape. Located in the subtropical region, the territory is marked by abundant precipitation which decrease from 1,600 mm annual in the northeast to 1,100 mm in the southwest. Average temperature is 20°C/68°F.

Political Organization and Demographic Structure:

This province, the capital of which is the city of Corrientes, is divided into 25 departments with separate political and administrative powers.

Annual growth rate is 17.7‰, while density is 9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Urban population comes up to 74%. (1991).

Economic Structure:

In 1994, the primary sector contributed 16% to the value added of the global supply of goods and services. The secondary sector generated 29%, and the remaining 55% corresponds to the supply of financial, transport and communications, trade, tourism, and government services.

The productive structure of Corrientes is strongly concentrated on primary activities and the processing of certain raw materials. The productive mix includes livestock (sheep and cattle), raising and processing of citrus, especially oranges, and rice, which has lately become quite significant due to the Brazilian market. Traditional industrial crops such as tea, mate and tobacco are also to be mentioned.
