Description:
The province of Buenos Aires is located in the Pampean region. It is bounded by the provinces of Santa Fe,
Córdoba and Entre Ríos, north; the Atlantic Ocean (Mar Argentino) and Río de la Plata, east; the
province of Río Negro and the Atlantic Ocean (Mar Argentino), south; and the provinces of Río Negro,
La Pampa and Córdoba, on the west.
It has an area of 307,571 square kilometers (8.2% of the country total) which, due to
their altitude, are totally comprised in the Pampean region, with temperate climate.
This region can be geographically subdivided into four main areas: the depressed pampa (pampa deprimida), cut
through by the Salado river, is an extremely flat area; the undulating pampa (pampa ondulada), northeast of
Salado river; the name is due to a series of slopes resulting from the design impressed upon this area by the
many rivers and streams of zigzagging lines.
Opposite to the northwest angle of the province is located the
dune pampa (pampa medanosa), a plateau containing a great number of lagoons and marshlands fed by irregular
rains and surrounded by dunes; lastly, the intermontane pampa (pampa interserrana), formed by mountains and
a plateau in between. To the east of this area, there are the sierras belonging to the Tandilia range, and
to the west, the ones corresponding to the Ventania range, with more elevated relief.
Since the very origins
of the Argentine Nation, the province of Buenos Aires has had utmost relevance due its location, the fertility
of its lands, its mild climate, and the fact that it has been the most important area of circulation and human
settlement. Nowadays, the most conspicuous characteristics of this province are: great concentrations in the
metropolitan area, and lesser relative population in the interior. 63% of the total population is concentrated
in less than 2% of the province’s territory.
Annual average temperature is 15°C/59°F, and total annual precipitation is nearly 800 mm.
This province, the capital city of which is La Plata, is divided into 128 departments with separate political and administrative powers.
