Nightlife:
Buenos Aires is never more alive than it is at night. It is what you'd expect from a city that invented tango. Avenues
come alive with people on their way to restaurants and theaters, especially Puerto Madero or Recoleta. People like to
dress up and stay out until dawn, and anyone who visits the city should go and see a tango show. There are several major venues, most of
them in San Telmo. After dinner or a night of dancing, Porteños like to grab a coffee at one of the city's myriad cafes, chat, and perhaps watch the sunrise.
Buenos Aires is a vibrant metropolis with over eleven million
inhabitants. It is one of the largest cities in the world. It is also
the most elegant and busiest city in South America and is in some way
the essence of the variety of the Argentine people.
Whilst of modern construction and dynamic activity, it has managed to
preserve old traditions and charming corners. One is fascinated by the
atmosphere, the individual personality of each of its neighborhoods,
the cordiality of its people and the wide selection of its cultural
and commercial opportunities.
Corrientes Avenue is the center of Buenos Aires, with plenty of
cinemas, theatres, shows, restaurants and pizzerias opened until early
hours in the morning. Lavalle Street and Santa Fe Avenue share the
excitement found at General San Martín, Borges and Recoleta cultural
centers, in Paseo La Plaza and in entertainment and gastronomic areas
such as Puerto Madero, Recoleta, Palermo Viejo, Las Cañitas, Paseo de
la Infanta, Arcos del Sol and Costanera Norte.
Buenos Aires has many cinemas and theatres. The Teatro Colón (Colón
Opera House), a monumental coliseum of extraordinary acoustics, hosts
international concerts, opera, and ballet. At night you can see tango
shows in different places.
Buenos Aires hardly ever sleeps. While some pubs open as early as 6pm, serious clubbing doesn't start before 2am, and frequently goes on until 6, 7am, or later. On Sundays, you can also find some after hours.
Palermo continues to be popular with the fashionable crowd, especially the areas of Las Cañitas and Palermo Hollywood, which are packed with trendy bars, clubs and restaurants. The streets surrounding La Recoleta Cemetery are also popular, especially at the weekends when the pavement bars and cafés remain busy until the action moves to the nearby clubs. A number of drinking options, including English and Irish pubs, exist on and around Calle Reconquista and Avenida 25 de Mayo, while San Telmo is a focal point for Bohemian bars and tango shows. Puerto Madero has become increasingly popular for sunset drinks and dining.
Nightlife is at its peak Thursday to Saturday but there’s always something happening throughout the week. Bars and clubs offer a range of music and entertainment options to meet all tastes, from tango shows to techno nightclubs. Admission charges range from $10 to $45. Some clubs allow women free entry on certain nights or offer a ‘free’ drink as part of the admission charge.
Casinos: The Casino Buenos Aires, Darsena Sur, Puerto Madero, is located on a Mississippi style boat and offers black jack, roulette, poker and slot machines. The minimum age is 18 years and dress is smart-casual.
